Last night, my mom and I attended the Picasso exhibit at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. And if you read this today or tomorrow, you must go see it before it leaves Richmond. It is a beautiful line of art that truly expresses who Picasso was in every way. And in case you didn’t know, the image to the left is an oil on canvas titled “Le Sacre Coeur,” which shows the early cubism of Picasso and also just happens to be one of my favorites. But, anywho, as we were on our way out of the last room of the exhibit, there was one of his quotes on the wall that said, “God is really only another artist. He invented the giraffe, the elephant and the cat. He has no real style, He just goes on trying other things.”
My first thought was… Hmm, Picasso really knew what he was talking about. God is definitely an artist, the best one in fact. Just look around and see the beauty He has created. We are sitting amongst the greatest work of art of all time. Picasso was dead on with that…
But, then, it got me thinking. The last part of the quote says, “…He just goes on trying other things.” Hm. I disagree. I believe our God has a very specific purpose for each thing that He does. God doesn’t just try to create something different. God has a detailed plan mapped out before the work even begins to exist. He doesn’t just fly by the seat of His pants thinking of new things to try.. No, our God does everything with a purpose in mind.
And just as each animal on this planet and every other human being, you were not designed by mistake. God chose how many freckles would adorn your face, how many hairs would grow from your head, how tall you would be…etc. None of these were done by mistake. And there aren’t two of us alike. Unlike Picasso, God didn’t create reprints and photographic copies. He did not make us on a mass production line. He took great care in making us who we were each meant to be. He had a purpose in mind for us even before we came into being. There is no one else out there that is just like you. You are unique.. a true original. We are each one of His beautiful masterpieces!
So, the next time you look in the mirror and criticize the way you may or may not look… stop and think. Remember, you were fearfully and wonderfully made. There is none other like you and you are a beautiful creation from God. He has a wonderful plan for you and what you did yesterday and what you will do tomorrow are all part of His Master plan. Have faith in the One who created you for He has some beautiful plans in store for you. Allow the Master Artist to finish the masterpiece He has intended you to be.
